The Laughing Fox

Live in a world of suspended amazement...

Randomness

I was home only a day before I pissed off my parents. Unfortunately, this is not a new record for me. While I enjoy being home, it is difficult to get reacquainted with doing things at home and not at school.

Mom got me flowers for when I got home Friday. They're very very very pretty. They make me very happy, and are in my room cheering me up.

It snowed yesterday, making it very beautiful outside. Then it turned around, rained, and melted all the snow. >.<

I gained weight during the last few weeks of the semester (I think everyone did. Stress.) Perhaps I shall join my parents in this diet thing -- just not to the same extreme. I vaugely like my plumpness. :P Means I'm not anorexic like everyone else at school.

I'm STILL working on project X. Let's all pray I get it done by X-mas. If not, then New Years perhaps?

I miss talking to Nicky. I know you all probably think I'm crazy because of that, since you know, she refuses to ever speak to me again, but I do. She was like a sister. Unfortunately, we also fought like sisters. And unlike real sisters, I can't make her talk to me. It still hurts. But I whine about not being able to talk to her enough to all of you. I won't go on a rant or tangent about this. Just know that it still hurts and I still miss her.

On the other hand, in attempts to make me feel better and get my mind off such things, Leigh and his friend Darran are trying to get me to roleplay. Unfortunately it's basically like online tabletop roleplaying, which I do not - I repeat - DO NOT understand. But I'm trying my hardest to comprehend. Again - I whine too much about it. They're trying to help me out. But this way of doing things is so darn confusing! It's taken me what, two weeks to use the character sheet to get the character I already understand in my head? Madness. But I'm trying.

I want to go up north and visit Beth and Nick for a day or two. Make sure Nick's treating Beth well. ;) I also want to see Amish country. And the horsies. And the chinchilla. And the cat. And the snake, if they have it by time I get up there. And the swords. I love the swords.

I have four weeks to clean my room. *pause* Go on, laugh. It's okay. I already know the room will win.

Going back a few random notes, LEIGH IS ONLINE AGAIN! There is much rejoycing.

I sent Steph a package a few weeks ago, and she finally got it. Halloween chocolates, some cheese stuff, and a calendar. :)

It's very very very cold out. So Jasmine and I snuggled for a few hours this afternoon to warm up.

The gerbils don't like my parents as much as me. This amuses me, even though it offends mom. :P I do wish they'd pop their heads out sometimes and at least say hi to her!

Finals are done. I'm praying I did well. I only know my grade in one class. Which is kinda depressing. I want to know all my grades. :-\ Or maybe I don't... I have 7 more grad schools to apply to. This is also depressing.

Grad school is also scaring the h-e-double-hockey-skates outta me. I'm terrified no one will accept me and offer me an assistantship. Anyone want to clean my room for me?

Oh, I'm also somewhat writing a story. Some of you have read the intro. And unless everyone is being mean and lying to me, I think they like it. But I'm not sure the story is that good, now that I've thought more about it.

If anyone who reads this *cough* BEN! *cough* is in Mason over break, hit me up on the cell. I'd love to get out and hang out with people. :)

I think I will try to post a Christmas song each day until Christmas.

So, to finish, the Redneck 12 Days of Christmas:

Wow, somebody done been to the WalMart!
(Jeff) Man, this is the stuff I got for Christmas.
Well you cleaned up! Whadya git?

Five flannel shirts
Four big mud tires
Three shotgun shells
Two hunting dogs
... And some parts to a Mustang GT.

Hey Bubba, you got gypped -- there's 12 days to Christmas.
(Jeff) I know that, I got it covered. Look over in the corner.
That's yours too?
Yea!

Chorus:
Twelve-pack of Bud
Eleven Wrastling tickets
Ten o' Copenhagen
Nine years probation
Eight table dancers
Seven packs of Redman
Six cans of Spam
Five flannel shirts
Four big mud tires
Three shotgun shells
Two hunting dogs
... And some parts to a Mustang GT.

Man, this ain't normal Christmas presents!
No, they're redneck gifts!
Redneck gifts?
Yea, you know, like
If you buy your wife earrings that double as fishing lures.
Or, if you can burp the entire chorus of "Jingle Bells"
Perhaps if you think "The Nutcracker" is something you did off a
High-dive.

Or, if you've ever misspelled something in Christmas lights.
Or, if you leave cold beer and pickled eggs for Santa Claus.

What's wrong with that?
I didn't say anything wrong with it...
It's hard to beat...

Chorus:
Twelve-pack of Bud
Eleven Wrastling tickets
Ten o' Copenhagen
Nine years probation
Eight table dancers
Seven packs of Redman
Six cans of Spam
Five flannel shirts
Four big mud tires
Three shotgun shells
Two hunting dogs
... And some parts to a Mustang GT.

Well, you can't really consider it a Christmas
'less you go down to the
Penitentiary and visit your mama.

You're not listenin' to me!
Get the car key outta your ear.
That's where the nine years probation comes in...
I'm gonna do it for ya again.
Now listen...

Chorus:
Twelve-pack of Bud
Eleven Wrastling tickets
Ten o' Copenhagen
Nine years probation
Eight table dancers
Seven packs of Redman
Six cans of Spam
Five flannel shirts
Four big mud tires
Three shotgun shells
Two hunting dogs
... And some parts to a Mustang GT.

For All You Spelling Freaks Like Me

From the Tounge & Quill - the USAF Writer's Manual - and feel free to put it into a word document to check the spelling. ;) It's a good reminder as to why we reread our drafts. :D

GO NAVY BEAT ARMY!

Final Score: 38-3, Navy Midshipmen!

Stand, Navy, down the field
Sails set to the sky;
We'll never change our course
So Army, you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy,
Anchor's Aweigh!
Sail, Navy, down the field
And sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.
~*~
Get under way, Navy,
Decks cleared for the fray.
We'll hoist the Navy Blue
So Army, down your Grey-ey-ey-ey
Full speed ahead, Navy;
Army, Heave to!
Furl Black and Grey and Gold
And hoist the Navy, hoist the Navy Blue.
~*~
Blue of the Seven Seas,
Gold of God's great sun,
Let these our colours be
'Til all of time be done-ne-ne-ne
By Severn shore we learn
Navy's stern call;
Faith, courage, service true
With honor over, honor over all
~*~
Stand, Navy, out to sea,
Fight our battle cry;
We'll never change our course,
So vicious foes steer shy-y-y-y
Roll out the T. N. T.
Anchors Aweigh!
Sail on to victory
And sink their bones
To Davy Jones, hooray!
~*~
Anchors Aweigh, my boys,
Anchors Aweigh
Farewell to college joys,
We sail at break of day-ay-ay-ay
Through our last night ashore,
Drink to the foam.
And 'til we meet once more,
Here's wishing you a happy voyage home.

Dance Lifts and Graduate Schools

So what do all these have in common? Erm... that's my life right now.

Grad school first. I have completely applied to, so far:

  1. Duke
  2. University of North Carolina
  3. Michigan State University
  4. Ohio State University
  5. University of Michigan

I am *almost* done with:

  1. University of Maryland

Which means up next is:

  1. University of Virgina (Dec 10)
  2. University of Tennessee (Dec 31)
  3. Indiana University (Jan 2)
  4. Miami University (Jan 10)
  5. University of Maine (Jan 15)
  6. University of Nebraska (Jan 15)

And then here are the deadline outliers:

  1. University of Cincinnati (May 1)
  2. University of Louisville (July 20.... but April 1 for fellowship applications? What?)

So once I keep completing essays, I'll be good to go. That's what's catching me up. They all want different essays, different number of essays, etc. So they all have to be informationally different. If informationally is even a word. Act like it is, for the sake of conversation.

I also worked on these damn things all during break. What a fun break.

Dance class!

We tried doing lifts LAST Monday, but there were more girls than guys interested. And I didn't get to try any lifts.

Well, today I did. And I hurt! The boys tried. They really did. But I kicked someone in the head because he didn't duck my feet (apparently I can hyperextend my back... and it's not my fault apparently, but I feel bad. I didn't want to hit him in the head. He's a nice boy. Other people I might not have minded as much.) I stepped on feet because they didn't put me down well. I fell several times, including right on my hipbone. I pulled several muscles in my upper back trying to keep from hurting them and to stay in position. We'll all be sore tomorrow.

It also doesn't help that, unlike my skating dance partners, I don't have much trust in these guys. They're not my boyfriends. They're not even good friends. Or instructors. So I don't trust them blindly NOT to drop me, so that makes me tenser than I should be, which means I screw up more. And these guys have never lifted a girl until last week, or for some, like my second partner, today.

But needless to say, even when I took a few hard falls on the gym floor, they DID help break the fall and in some cases came down with me. Their backs will hurt. My back, shoulders, arms, and hip all hurt. We all hurt.

HOWEVER. It was fun. Not as fun as when my dance partner used to twirl me above his head. (I miss Sean. He was amazing. Just amazing. And a good dancer.) And there wasn't much trust or confidence. But it was fun. Very very very fun.

We laughed a lot.

There was a LOT of apologizing. A lot of that going around.

More apologizing.

Some actual completions of flips, spins, and twirls. That didn't hurt. And that they weren't digging their fingers into my hip instead of using their arms. And I didn't fall. And I didn't twist anything. And I landed on balance.

And then. Then... it was really really cool. Amazingly so. Flips are fun... when everything works and no one is falling.

We Need A Little Christmas

from MAME

Haul out the holly;
Put up the tree
Before my spirit falls again.
Fill up the stocking,
I may be rushing things,
But deck the halls again now.

For we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute,
Candles in the window,
Carols at the spinet.
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute.

It hasn't snowed a single flurry,
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry;
So climb down the chimney;
Put up the brightest string of lights
I've ever seen.

Slice up the fruitcake;
It's time we hung some tinsel
On that evergreen bough.
For I've grown a little leaner,
Grown a little colder,
Grown a little sadder,
Grown a little older

And I need a little angel
Sitting on my shoulder,
Need a little Christmas now.

Haul out the holly;
Well, once I taught you all
To live each living day.

Fill up the stocking

But Auntie Mame,
It's one day past Thanksgiving Day now.

But we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute,
Candles in the window,
Carols at the spinet.
Yes, we need a little Christmas
Right this very minute.

It hasn't snowed a single flurry,
But Santa, dear, we're in a hurry

So climb down the chimney;
Put up the brightest string of lights
I've ever seen.

Slice up the fruitcake;
It's time we hung some tinsel
On that evergreen bough.
For we need a little music,
Need a little laughter,
Need a little singing
Ringing through the rafter,

And we need a little snappy
"Happy ever after,"
Need a little Christmas now.
Need a little Christmas now.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Over the teeth and past the gums,
Watch out stomach, here it comes!

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!

PS. What is it about holidays that make parents snippy?

For Good Entertainment

If you enjoy good entertainment, please visit Steph's blog. It shows you the extent of our late night intelligence. And is just a hilarious read if you realize it's me and her talking.

Rawrg.

Yes. Rawrg.

So, it may be a trick, but now that I'm at home, guess what. My wired internet is back. Now, it's said that at Miami too. But then it disappears. This... has been stable for several hours. Rawrg. I want stable internet at Miami, too!

I have a crapload to do. Primarily, application crap. I hate applications. I hated them in high school, and I hate them even more now, esp. when my grades are worse than they were in HS. And so are my scores. I get stupider the more schooling I have, I swear. But I'm pretty freaked out by this whole ordeal. And don't anyone tell me 'of course you'll get in somewhere'. I'm tired of hearing it. I want to gripe and complain. And no, 'of course' is not an 'of course'. Grad school is not equal to under grad school. No, my grades and scores are not bad. But neither are they good. IN COMPARISON to what grad schools desire, are looking for, and can get. I am really just hoping SOMEONE of value will both take me and pay for me to work for them.

I wish someone had told me in high school to go to a easy school, like UC, for undergrad. Then I would have gotten A's, had time to do nothing while half my class sat in jail, and I'd be like a golden child for these schools. But no, I go to Miami. Where stuff is stupidly hard. For no good reason. Like multiple guess and random identifications on history exams. WHY would you do that for a history class? You WRITE in history. You don't do particulars. You do connections and themes and analyzing crap. You don't write about random dude on page 468 of book XLDSR for a page on an in class exam. Seriously. That ain't history, y'all. That just plain stupid, hear me?

Yeah. So. Sleep now. Home for 'break'. Let's see if I get one.

Internet problems

So, my internet is on the fritz. As, apparently, am I. Maybe I can check myself into Dell and they can do a full update on my brain. I think it needs to be jumpstarted. Maybe I should take it to the auto dealer instead. Get some cables, hook it up, and go.

I'm most definately ready for this semester to be over. I've .... no, I won't go into it right now. It's 1 am. Maybe I'll go into it all at a later date.

Suffice it to say things aren't great.

101 posts!

Lol.

Anyways, brief update. Swamped as usual. Grad applications due very soon. Very stressed about that. Esp since the Duke deadline I thought was Dec 15... it's Nov 15. I feel really bad I did that to my professors.

I have 14 different personal statements to write - each university wants a different statement with a different purpose.

I have a rough draft for my senior capstone paper due (theoretically) Wednesday, as well as a presentation on the information.

I have a paper due for Classics on Thursday, and this guy hates the way I write anyways.

And more applications are due.

Thank you.
