The Laughing Fox

Live in a world of suspended amazement...

The Sacred Rac

This is a story I've not seen in years... but I have to post it now that I've found it.

An Indian anthropologist, Chandra Thapar, made a study of foreign cultures which had customs similar to those of his native land. One culture in particular fascinated him because it reveres one animal as sacred, much as the people in India revere the cow.

The tribe Dr. Thapar studied is called the Asu and is found on the North American continent north of the Tarahumara of Mexico. Though it seems to be a highly developed society of its type, it has an overwhelming preoccupation with the care and feeding of the rac - an animal much like a bull in size, strength and temperament. In the Asu tribe, it is almost a social obligation to own at least one if not more racs. Anyone not possessing at least one is held in low esteem by the community because he is too poor to maintain one of the beasts properly. Some members of the tribe, to display their wealth and prestige, even own herds of racs.

Unfortunately the rac breed is not very healthy and usually does not live more than five to seven years. Each family invests large sums of money each year to keep its rac healthy and shod, for it has a tendency to throw its shoes often. There are rac specialists in each community, perhaps more than one if the community is particularly wealthy. These specialists, however due to the long period of ritual training they must undergo and to the difficulty of obtaining the right selection of charms to treat the rac, demand costly offerings whenever a tribesman must treat his ailing rac.

At the age of sixteen in many Asu communities, many youths undergo a puberty rite in which the rac figures prominently. The youth must petition a high priest in a grand temple. He is then initiated into the ceremonies that surround the care of the rac and is permitted to keep a rac.

Although the rac may be used as a beast of burden, it has many habits which would be considered by other cultures as detrimental to the life of the society. In the first place the rac breed is increasing at a very rapid rate and the Asu tribesmen have given no thought to curbing the rac population. As a consequence the Asu must build more and more paths for rac to travel on since its delicate health and its love of racing other racs at high speeds necessitates that special areas be set aside for its use. The cost of smoothing the earth is too costly for any one individual to undertake, so it has become a community project and each tribesman must pay an annual tax to build new paths and maintain the old. There are so many paths needed that some people move their homes because the rac paths must be as straight as possible to keep the animal from injuring itself. Dr. Thapar also notes that unlike the cow, which many people in his country hold sacred, the excrement of the rac cannot be used as either fuel or fertilizer. On the contrary, its excrement is exceptionally foul and totally useless. Worst of all, the rac is prone to rampages in which it runs down anything in its path, much like stampeding cattle. Estimates are that the rac kills thousands of the Asu in a year.

Despite the rac's high cost of its upkeep, the damage it does to the land, and its habit of destructive rampages, the Asu still regard it as being essential to the survival of their culture.

Cold Weather

So I've been busy and I've been sick. And I'm tired of my computer acting weird. We're watching the Caine Muntiny. It's an interesting movie. I like how we're watching that in my AF class, and it's a naval movie. Ugh, I'm so tired of being sick. Well, only another 2 hours before I'm free for the weekend.

Grad school responses SHOULD start coming in in the next few weeks. Hopefully responses are good and positive... and paid. I'm nervous.

I'm also finally confident enough to begin actually writing my story. I have names, and I'm happy.

Alright, I'm done. Toodles.

Hola!

I guess I should post something, since I haven't in a while.

Hi!

Oh, classes. They look pretty awesome. My Poly Sci class is really amazing. I don't usually like Political Science, but this teacher is just amazing. I love it. Taking three USAF classes, one history, one poly sci, and ice hockey. They're all pretty cool.

Currently watching Ghost Hunters International. It makes me happy.

I don't really wanna talk anymore, so bye! ;) Toodles y'all!

Arg!!

Alright, I'm sorry I'm not online.

Here may be a few reasons why you may not see me on any IMs:
  1. Miami's internet sucks; therefore, when I'm in my room, it flickers in and out and doesn't really exist. They just want us to think it does.
  2. Cleaning my disaster of a room.
  3. No internet.
  4. Playing hockey.
  5. No internet.
  6. Hanging out with people.
  7. No internet.
  8. Creating my way cool story. That doesn't exist yet.
  9. No internet.
  10. Graduate school apps. When I have internet. Which leads to our last, and most definate, reason for not being on, #11:
  11. NO INTERNET.

You have reached me at sassyphoenix.blogspot.com. Thank you for listening and holding. Please leave your name, number, and a brief message, and internet willing, I will return your comments. Or, for some of you, just call my cell phone. ;)

PS. I have more to talk about. I just don't feel like doing it now. Like about some of my awesome classes. Like ice hockey. With which I now have a stick and equipment, except for a helmet. That story may come later. Cheers!

*snarl*

So, I made the comment resembling the fact that it's depressing that I'll have to work the rest of my life. This was after I was asked if I was ready to return to school, and I said no, cuz it would involve work. Then I said something along the lines of 'meh, I'll just marry a millionaire and be lazy.' The response: "You can't even get a date, let alone get married." Thank you, mom, for that comment. That was so uplifting and reassuring. I mean seriously, like I didn't know that. Ever thought that I despise all the jerks that do ask me to do something in said context? I happen to have high standards. And who said I couldn't get a date? Maybe I haven't wanted any. Besides, all the people I'm interested in have been taken thus far. So I found that to be a very unfair comment on her part, and I'm pissed. Really, really pissed. I figure it was an offhand remark on her account, but that cut deep and really pissed me off. Which is why I'm griping on here. Because I am so pissed.

NO CLASS

We ran by Miami the other day to drop stuff off and get books, and I started talking to Cayton. Until then, I'd been considering dropping his class (I signed up for 18 hours, I'm taking 13) and taking another. Then, the kicker: "Well Allison, see you next Tuesday. If you're not asleep in class again." *grumble grumble grumble* I really need to take his class. Because he's a very very powerful man. And he knows I'm supposed to take his class. And, well, I guess I will be.

I've also been rather sick and feeling like crap the last several days. I think I'm sick.

And right now I have a headache. Probably because I'm so mad. So cheerio, and adieu.

Rats are a girl's best friend.

Well, went to the funeral yesterday. I talked to Robby Moser -- I'm so afraid for him. I hope someone's put him on a suicide watch. He's a prime candidate for it. It's frightening. I hope all ends as well as it can for him.

I sat behind Victoria (I was told to. By her mom. So I was stuck in the family section. Definately, in retrospect, not a good thing. He was cremated and his urn was in the front of the auditorium, next to his motorcycle. Victoria got up and spoke, and it was a lovely speech. I cried. A lot. And Robby had prerecorded his speech, and the playing of taps, because he didn't want to break down halfway through his speech. It was so heartbreaking. Parents shouldn't have to bury (or cremate) their children. They shouldn't ever have to do that.

I wore a black dress, and my shoes were complimented by many. That made me very happy. If I have to wear heels, I like it when people complement them. I think I looked pretty good. I went in to the HS before the ceremony to hang out with mom and the others, then after the service met up with mom for lunch. We went looking for hermit crab shells, and I got to hold several rats. Oh, they made me so very very happy. So very happy. I got tons of ratty kisses, and one of the babies fell asleep on me, nustled in the crook of my arm. Oh it made me so happy. Nothing quite compares to the love of a rat.

Have a few more apps to finish sending out, then I'll be done. I just have had no motivation for anything the last week or so. I've been too upset.

And I've lost interest in finishing this post. So, I'm done for now.

Later.

2 Hours

Well, I held it together during the entire visitation. Stood in line for 2 hours, then hugged Victoria for a long time, as well as her parents, then went and talked to the random ROTC people there that I still knew. Went out to Donato's afterwards with some of the people Victoria and I play DDR with. Then I came home and had a damn good cry.

Tomorrow's the funeral. We'll see how well I hold up then. I'm betting I won't hold up very well at all. If at all.

I also want to make a point to see his best friend. I should have said something to him tonight, and I didn't. I regret that immensely. No one will talk to him - he's being accused of involuntary manslaughter and weapons possession. He needs a hug. A big big hug. And tomorrow I am going to make a point to seek him out and see how he's doing.

I hope everyone has a better night than I am.

*whimper*

So, if for the next several days you wonder why I'm in a bad mood, sad mood, non-talking mood, this is why:

Daniel Ferraro died last night. Now, it was a stupid way to die. You don't go making pipe bombs to blow up an old wooden playhouse in your backyard, which is in the middle of a subdivision in a very populated suburb. You just don't.

But that's not the point. I knew him. He was Navy ROTC. He was in Pistol Club. He was my RA (and a good friend of mine)'s little brother. I have known him for a year and a half, because of all my navy classes. He was funny, witty, and just cool to be around. I always knew him as Ferraro. He was just a cool kid. He was also only 19.

This is the fourth Miami kid to die this school year. Two were hit by trains (both theoretically suicidal), one ODed on meds that he shouldn't have had in the first place, and now this. But this is the first guy I've known, and actually known, talked to, liked, and was generally good friends with, who has died. I've known others, yes, but it was a distant knowledge. Barely acquaintences.

Now, we're talking ROTC people here. They're a close knit family. I knew this kid. And I knew him well. I can see his face, hear his voice, hear his laugh, watch him play pranks. He was an amazing kid, even if he did do stupid stuff.

And I'm also good friends with Victoria, his older sister, my RA, and a good friend of mine. She's the one that taught me swing dancing can, indeed, be fun. She's dragged me along to dances, and convinced me to get out of the dorms (bless her heart). And now her little brother is gone. And I have no way to comfort her. And this hurts just about as bad. I know her parents, and I knew her brother. The only person I didn't know in her family was her little sister.

Visitation is going to be on Sunday from 4-8pm. I'm definately going, and for probably all four hours. I need to be there for them. I love that family, and I want to do all I can. The service will be at 10 am on Monday - I'm also going to that. They only live 10 minutes away from me.

I've been a complete wreck all day. When mom told me about it this morning, she didn't know that I knew him. But I've been crying and depressed all day. I'm just a complete mess. I can't focus, I can't concentrate, I can't do much of anything today. So if I'm not very conversational, I apologize right now. But I'm missing a great guy and grieving for his family and my friends. I'm not used to people I actually know really well dying. This is a shock to me, and I'm still trying to cope.

I hope everyone else is having a better day, and I will talk again later.

YAY!

I hope everyone had a darling New Year's Eve and an amazing Christmas. I know I did, and I'm happy everyone is still around for it.

Well, I gave my parents their present. They really liked it. Took eternity to make it though, didn't it!? Thanks to all you lovely people who helped make it a success - Leigh for the musical finds, Steph for some editing, Cristina for artistic input... Now I have to clean it all up. :P

Let's see, working backwards.

We now have a family membership to a gym. I think I'm the only one actually interested, however.

Read an amazing new series -- okay so not that new, but it still hasn't been all written and published yet. The Ranger Apprentice series rocks my world right now. Takes LOTR's Rangers and puts them in a King Arthur-esque setting. It's a cool blend. Although a teen read, it's definately one worth reading. Fourth book comes out in May.

Christmas was good. Got several awesome things. I should post pictures at some point... WITH my NEW digital camera. ;)

http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1&grp=2&productNr=25424

There's the camera. Also have two lenses for it: 18-55mm, then a 55-200mm. It's pretty dang sweet. I also have a camera bag for it now, as well as lens protectors, cleaners, enhancers, etc.

I got some CDs by Anuna, and some figurines of knights and the like. A book on sailing ships, and The Daring Book for Girls. I got some cute stuffed bears that had on military uniforms (Navy, Army, Marines). Some watches with the navy and marine emblems on them. An 'If You Give A Mouse A Cookie' mouse. A vest, and a shawl. A book on Star Wars (Star Wars Vault). An INTERNATIONAL CALLING CARD so that I could talk to Steph. ^_^ Some DVDs that include Sister Act/Sister Act 2, Ratatouille, POTC3, and The Last Unicorn. And various gerbil treats.

All in all, a dang good Christmas.

But, now that I have updated and appeased the masses, I shall go.

Toodles.

Hi.

I'm not dead. Not that anyone would have noticed.
